Can I change CPUs without formatting?

I was thinking of switching from a Duron 1.8 GHz to perhaps an Athlon XP 2900+ or Athlon XP 3000+.
Can that be done without formatting my HD?
 
Yes. Assuming your motherboard supports the processor you intend to install, all you should need to do is drop in the CPU and you're done.

BTW, there are deals on tigerdirect where you can buy a CPU and mobo combo for the same price as the CPU alone. So, you could sell the motherboard on eBay. Hehehe.
