I am planning to multi-boot a few O/S's on my Hd and I want to put DOS on my C:\ partition. I know that the DOS version that comes with Win 98 is MS-DOS 7.10, but is this version available for sale anywhere, or is it only a part of Win 98? I have DOS 6.22, but I'd like to get the latest version if at all possible.

Thanks

As far as I know, the last version of MSDOS that was released as a standalone product was 6.22, which is still available everywhere.

Is there anything in particular that you need in 7.10 that isn't available under 6.22?

A better question would be why he needs DOS at all :p

The latest version of DOS was 6.22. Windows 95 was DOS v7.0, and I would guess Win98 could be DOS v7.10, though I'm not sure on that one.

Windows 9x is just DOS in disguise. If you boot to command prompt, you're in DOS.

for dos games which need the ram area <640k, 7.xx is terrible, b/c it has so much bloat, and loads doublespace or whatever. Getting games to work under 6.x is MUCH easier

By default, MS-DOS version 7.xx does not actually load ANYTHING and does not contain any bloat unless you have entries in your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS.

Most systems should have these files empty. While it is true that version 7.xx of the COMMAND.COM itself does take up a little more memory than the 6.22 version, a well configured AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS will give you almost the same available memory as the older version.

We run DOS 6.22 on our Mission Critical Machines and DOS 7.1 on our Win98 machines, on a LAN. Should I put DOS7.1 on the other machines? What are the benefits? Y2K directory entries, etc.?

Can this let me run FAT 32 on my DOS machines?

How do I execure a batch file from the DOS box under win me (hp laptop), the one in the pif is ignored.

Yes, the Win98SE Command.com provided (version 10.something) is Y2K Compliant and allows you to access FAT32.
