Not really - you only have one IDE controller. I burn three at once, but on three different computers at the same time. :)

It's called CD mastering. You can burn as many CD's as the software application can attend to. Providing that you use 3rd party IDE card support, it can be done. SCSI setups have been known to do this, but in this situation it would more expensive than IDE. IIRC, Stomp inc RecordNow Maxx or whatever it is called is capable of doing this out of the box. FWIR, Nero needs a update to do this.

I have done it on my regular, IDE based PC when I had 2 burners hooked up. There were no problems and the software (Nero) worked fine.

He must have a major bootlegging operation going on there

He's probably trying to cut time in image backups like i do. Or probably trying to do some CD mastering as i do with software to get his work flow going.

Or bootlegging.

Nobody's made a point of it, but can you use Nero to burn DIFFERENT CD's at the same time? Or any other CD burning software? I've not tried Nero with two drives, and I've never run into a need to burn two discs at once anyway. If you can't burn different discs, can you just use two different burning apps at the same time? Or will they interfere with each other?

If you can't burn different things at the same time, that'd kind of kill the "image backup" theory, unless he wants multiple copies of his backups.
