can I build a speaker box out of aluminum or steel?

I was thinking about building a polished aluminum speaker box for my two 10" subs. The manufacture calls for 1" thick medium density fiber board. How does 1/4" aluminum stand against that? My step dad can cut out and weld the box for me with ease, so I am thinking about it. Any suggestions?

It might make the sound sound weird. Weird echoes or vibrations and might increase distortion. Wood absorbs some vibrations, but aluminum might enhance it.

You want your material to dampen the sounds of vibrations or such, that's why subs usually use wood or fiber board instead of plastic(which doesn't sound as good). You want something dense and that dampens sound so that the sound you get is resonating out through the speakers and not through the metal which will make it sound weird like was said.

Could you just build a box to put a wooden or fiber board speaker inside of the metal box you fashion? That might work.

The aluminum might suffice for a tweeter enclosure, but subwoofer is a big no-no. Dynamat or Senthypone wont help either. The best solution is ONLY (and i mean it, ONLY) the wood-particle-board (or fiber board), about .7 to 1 inch thick, WITH dynamat or senthipone filling. Fiber board absorbs the distortion-vibration better than anything out there.

What is this Senthypone? Is it cheaper than Dynamat and is it a real alternative? I am warming up to dynamating my car and am looking for cheaper alternatives, such as Ice Guard.
