Can I bring cheese back to America from Switzerland?

American cheese is kind of shitty. I want to bring back some good Gruyere! I'm finding a lot of conflicting reports online - some say you can bring no dairy whatsoever, others say you can bring back hard cheeses (cheddar, gruyere) but not soft. And others say that no one checks for cheese anyway, so as long as it's in a sealed container so as to not stink up the bag...

Anyone have experience with this?

1) There area number of fantastic American cheese producers. Just avoid the regular crap in the dairy section and get a specialty store.

2) Plenty of imported cheeses are available at specialty stores. The Atlanta area has few shops dedicated only to cheese. They get the same cheese you'll be attempting to bring back on a plane. Why not just get it there?

I have brought back a few Goudas from Amsterdam though, but this was about 4 years ago.

Because it's much cheaper here, even with the exchange rate (which is currently 1:1 but used to be much better, of course)

go to whole foods, they have tons of imported cheeses but you will pay like $20-$40/lb.

1) The only good American cheese I've had was in Wisconsin. In any case, I don't have any near where I live.

2) Getting imported cheese is easy, but expensive. It's easily half the price in Switzerland. It's the same reason I'm bringing back wine (a $100 bottle of French wine in America is much cheaper locally)

Way to not answer the fucking question.

Look OP, here's what you do. You'll need to get a package of condoms...

My family or I regularly make trips back from Switzerland being that I am originally from there and I always bring back cheese (Gruyère especially too), we have never had the cheese taken away from us but I had to argue about it once or twice.
The main thing you want is the cheese to be still sealed as you stated and not be in massive quantities.

On a similar note Trader Joes and Safeway carry a pretty good Gruyère.

Yes, that is exactly the problem. Here I can get really great local cheese for $15-$20/kilo (ie 2.2 lbs)

Just ignore him. He thinks that if you spend more money on something it must be good, like a $200 pair of jeans.

I'd give it a try. My parents brought back a HUGE hunk of Parmesan from Italy.

I like how you think.

I think someone was thinking of a different kind of cheese. I'll take some blond Lebanese.

I prefer a robust, sticky black block of Thai, but very few "cheese shoppes" carry it here.

Everything goes better with cheese!

My friend brought some back from France a few days ago. An agriculture dog even came up and sniffed it. The handler searched it but said it was fine.

Wax encased cheeses can be brought in as long as you don't open them. All other cheeses should be vacuum sealed. Many cheese sellers that serve tourists in Europe have vacuum seals so that Brits, Americans and Asians can take it back.

iirc, all milk bound for cheese in the US must be pasteurized first. that means crappier cheese, at times. that even applies to imported cheeses.

so smuggle that bitch in!
