Can I bring batteries on an airplane?

I have a 48 pack of AA batteries from COSTCO. I want to bring them on an airplane (either carry on or checked baggage). Anybody know the current rules? I got hustled last year when I was coming back from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. They confiscated all of my batteries. I figured they were confiscating the batteries at the airport and then taking them for their own personal use or selling them, but I don't argue with locals in third world countries when the police officers have automatic weapons. I haven't had any problems in U.S. airports, but I just wanted to confirm that this would be kosher.

I didn't have any problems bring on batteries two weeks ago, I think you should be fine.

Terrorists can hold a 9-volt battery up to the flight crew and force them to stick their tounge on it.
