Can I break my lease because of a burglary?

OK, about 40 minutes ago I come home to find detectives talking to my neighbor two doors down. There were tons of cop cars outside, and a few fire trucks. I wait for a bit, and the detectives come to talk to me. Turns out, the guy came home to find his girlfriend hurt on the floor. She said that a guy was robbing their apartment when she got home, and he assaulted her. Could be true, might not. I've never as long as I've been here even heard the two argue, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Anyway, I guess she is going to be OK.

So, on to my point. I've been wanting to move out of this place for a few months, but I've got 4 months left on my lease. Would this burglary be a good enough excuse to break my lease without penalty? Can I say I don't feel safe here for myself or my girlfriend, and want to move?

it's all up to the terms of the lease

i'd say with such a short time to go, they wouldn't give you too much grief about wanting to leave

You could say it. Talk to the manager about breaking the lease to move because you fear for your safety and that of your girlfriend. It would carry more weight if you've never been late on a payment or had any negative complaints agains't you.

Never been late, never had a complaint, so I'm good there. I bet most people don't even know I live here.
