I want to find out if I can share my Cable connection with a 56K user that would dial in to me. Would it be worth trying? What problems would it cause for the host?

Check your terms of service with your cable company though. I bet it is against the rules.

That said, since one 56K connection would use very little bandwidth, I doubt they would ever be able to find out.

With linux and a modem, you should be able to set that up without a problem. Some people I know do this for use when they are on the road.

It is possible!
But, I might be expensive I you want to to do it in Windows.
The only Windows which provides special service do do that (called Remote Access Server)
is Windows NT 4.0 Server or Windows 2000 Server, both of them are kinda pricey (min. $300.00 for NT 4)
But if you already have it installed then .. it is only a matter of installing and configuring such a service....

You can do this by setting a Freesco router : Freesco's homepage

I have never done it though, but Freesco is pretty simple to setup from what I have done so far... Linux knowledge isn't required either.

I thought two regular 56k modems couldnt connect to each other at 56k, rather they were limited to 33.6. I think that it has something to do with how the phone company runs cables to your house.... However, it has been a while since I looked into this.

Anyways, it would be real easy with either Windows 2000 Server or Linux. I just finished reading a book entitled _Remote Access - 24 Seven_ that explained exactly how to do this...

What's the deal with RAS in WinNT Workstation 4.0? I remember it talking about that when I installed the OS a long time ago. I realize I can't use NT Workstation as a server, so why does it have RAS?

I like the Freesco idea, that's interesting.

This have nothing to do with how the phone company runs cables to your house, is just a normal modem don't connect at 56Kb to another normal modem. U need a RAS modem to connect at 56Kb, if u want a RAS modem check in multitech
site, they a have a very good RAS modems

Actually as long as they are both v.90 modems they are capable of connecting to each other at 56k. However, the reason that they don't connect at 56k when you call from one house to another house is because there are addition analog/digital conversions that do not take place when you dial into an ISP [because they are digitally connected to the CO (i.e. not using POTS)]

The bottom line is that 56k can only survive so many A/D conversions.

yes you can do it...but there are alot of things that will not make you want to do this

Even ifyou get software licening..

You have to get a pri from phone company which is expensicve....this allows multiple people ot connect to 1 num..

Reselling you net is illegal but who cares a couple of user wont matter but you expenses will be too much...you wont make anymoney at all!
