I would suggest an arts degree, at least 5 years. Video cards output lot of colours which is used for art, so you need to understand art to make something that can make art. It's just art all the way down.
See, I'm unable to do a ton of stuff because I am colorblind. Many different kinds of CB, but I figure just about all of them render you unable participate in a lot of art forms. Including this stuff, obviously.
I tried to develop a career in desktop publishing before I switched to database development. I wasn't aware at the time that I was crippled for DP, for DD mostly has little to do with color perception. I tried to become a photographer too, which didn't work out. I had a B&W darkroom. But color, I didn't mess with much at the time. I have a great sense of what makes a good photograph (IMO), I enjoy doing it, but maybe I'm hamstrung to be an Ansel Adams.
