I have a router serving dhcp, the way my house is wired is that everything has to go thru the router, is it possible for my computer to be connected to the router but not use the dhcp, but use the static ip (i have more than one) and gateway assigned by the DSL company? OR would this not be possible since i am goin through the router?

i have a similar problem...to alleviate it i just bought a cheap hub and split the incoming broadband (i.e. one to my main computer with takes one IP and one to router which takes the other IP)

as far as i know, you cannot do what you are trying to do, because you will always be behind the router

no, but what you could do is connect the router and pc into a hub or switch, connect the cable modem to the hub as well, then assign one of your static IPs to the pc. That would put it fully out on the internet, so you may want to install a software firewall on the Pc.

You will probably need to experiment with crossovers to get it to work, depending on your router and cable modem. You can utilize uplink ports to do the same thing.

hmm my netgear router has one feature where i can have one computer bypass all the firewall stuff...so ill just do that and give myself the ip 192.168.0.2 and start dhcp at .03 :) that way i can bypass firewall and just still use the router... Instead of tediously forwarding a billion ports
