can I ask why this thread was locked?

My guess is that there is an "Official GMail thread" in Off Topic. Of course, a post/edit in the thread SAYING SO might help, rather than just locking it outright, but most DC members don't browse OT (and I don't blame them personally), and want some DC members to get some invites, rather than the hounds in OT.

There's a stickied thread in Hot Deals as well. Maybe they think that 2 is enough. You can always put conditions on the invites. Many members do. Like "must have been a member for a year" or "must answer this question correctly" or, for your purpose, "must be an active participant in DC".

That is all well and good, but as I said, many DC members visit the forums for JUST the DC forum, and wouldn't go browsing around HD/OT, and therefore wouldn't spot the threads.

However, if they saw a thread in DC, then they would investigate. That is the only thread regarding Gmail in DC for 2 months, compared to the 50+ threads I have seen in OT alone in the past month (even WITH the sticky in place).

I think it's more a case of wondering WHY it got locked, especially as there was no notice put up, and it's not as though there were 18 other threads on the same subject, when (as far as i thought) most Mods know/realise that the DC forum is generally quite a tightly-knit group, and people don't venture out of it too much.

Overzealous moderation, or a mod didn't get one. If it was a jealous mod, let me know. I've got one I can spare. :)

EDIT: There does appear to be atleast one other thread dealing with gmail invited in DC forum.

And Fusetalk still doesn't conform to the settings I set in Mozilla. :|

Which is a 2 month old thread, bumped up due to the locking of the other, active thread.

Both threads were active at the same time, I believe. Not positive, and a bit too aggrivated at something entirely unrelated to go check though. :p
