Can I alphabetize a list of names by the last word in ms word

yes that is possible, but you have to have the last name first,
1) try this:
highlight the names, goto Table > sort

2) or try this:

put your names into a table, however many rows you need, and 2 columns, one for the 1st and last,
hight the whole table (not the outside, its picky), goto Table> Sort, and in the Sort box, select column 2 (where your last names should be) and click accending or decending, whatever one you want.

you can always make that table invisiable if you want.
