I jsut got a Sony E540 21" inch monitor. All of the specs, even on Sony's site, list the max resolution at 1920x1440. But I am able to run the monitor at 2048x1536 at 85hz without any visual dfects. Usually with past monitors I would get an out of scan range error when I made the resolution too high. Will running at 2048 damage my monitor since it is out of spec?

It should be fine, but it may decrease the lifespan of your monitor. Just like you can run videocards and RAM beyond specs, but they may blow out in 2 years instead of 4. Risk as ye will....
