Hi all -

I'm stumped ... just rebuilt a failing (read occassionally hanging / freezing w/out any other indications) pc w/ new new mobo (tyan 2056 i810e), pIII 667 retail, 256 MB micron-ic (but otherwise generic) single sim and new power supply.

The damn thing still hangs. Only things that are original are old 9GB hard drive and generic software 56k modem.

I've been a software guy for years and have built a few pc's in my time, but never really seen a modem or hard drive hang system.

Thoughts?

I've seen hard drives hang systems. Does this happen to be an IBM 9.1GB drive? I had a system for repair a few months ago that had random problems with booting and freezing. The hard drive checked out OK on 3 different occassions (the owner kept bringing it back to me). Finally, during it's last visit I really stressed it hard for 24 hours and the drive croaked. About time! This drive was bad all along (about 6 months), it just took awhile to all out die.

I would highly suspect that drive.

Good Luck! :)

You have a lot of variables here... Start with the basics...
HD can cause computers to crash... Is it making noises..? Did you have problems with it before in the old system..? Does it always crash when writing data to it..? Format the HD and see if scandisk can find bad sectors...

Remember "new parts" do not always mean working parts...

I have a piece'o'crap Diamond SupraMax software modem that hangs every computer I put it in unless there is an empty PCI slot between it and any other peripheral. And I've had hard drives hang systems too, especially BIG drives in OLD systems.
