Can GTX 1080 do 4k60fps maxed out?

Ah, I just read that a single 980 cannot run witcher 3 at 1080/60 max. I have another question though. Does a 4k res output literally require 4 times the graphics power of 1080p? If not, what is the average ratio?

Definitely not. A 1080 is probably gonna be 20-30% faster than a 980ti, and 2 980ti's can't even do it on most of the AAA games. The 1080Ti will probably get us there, or close to it though.

Reviews are up and the cards aren't THAT IMPRESSIVE as I thought they'd be. You guys think a 1080 is overkill for 1080p gaming though? I'm thinking about skipping the founder's edition now but the nonreference cards look so ugly. Hope asus or evga does better.

Not even Titan X SLI can max Witcher 3 (with hairworks) at 4K.

A single 980ti can do 40-45 fps with hairworks off, textures max, no AA, medium shadows, and everything else high (one toggle below max), with the stuff on the advanced menu turned off (like blurring, etc).

An aftermarket 1080 at say 2.1-2.2ghz should be able to maintain a solid 60fps at 4k with similar settings.

4K is still way the hell out there in terms of maxing new AAA games out @ 60+fps. Two aftermarket or water cooled 1080's with a ridiculous OC is your best bet. Even then it will be a lag fest I bet.

Good point there but I don't think my motherboard supports SLI. I just bought an asus z170m-plus micro atx mobo and for some reason it supports crossfire but not sli on an intel platform (?). Anyway, I never liked dual GPUs that much because I have never gotten this close to a high performance computer and SLI always seemed like a waste of money since it gets bottlenecked a lot.

Yeah, I posted that before I read most of the reviews on the 1080. I thought it was supposed to be twice as fast as 980 or ti or something and my memory gets hazy often. Didn't they say some ridiculous things about pascal just a month or so ago? Also does anyone know if you need 4x the graphical power of 1080 to do 4k? Does it depend on the game?

Read up on the 1080 some more.

SLI should not be bottlenecked any more. :)

Well I can't afford to SLI two 1080s anyway so I might hop over to AMD and their Polaris GPUs in case I might want a dual setup but I haven't heard any news from them in a while. This would have been my first Nvidia videocard too! What are the best options for my build? I have the said motherboard with a 6700k and a RM750x which I thought would be plenty for my setup. I might crossfire the Polaris 10 GPUs if the price/performance ratio looks good and if my PSU can handle it. Polaris is supposed to be very energy efficient.

Anyone know if the second pcie gpu slot on my motherboard is good for anything? It comes with a m.2 slot and I heard that it shuts down some of my PCIE lanes if I use sata express(?) on it. I'm kind of starting to regret my motherboard purchase. It was advertised as the flagship matx board but I think there are pricier and better asus matx motherboards out here. Probably should have done more research.

Yeah I'm starting to feel as if my motherboard is a brick considering I bought an expensive case and components this time around. That advertising though...
I'm trying to get into FSFT forum right now so I tend to post quickly to get my counts up but I have some legitimate questions. Anyone know anything about my motherboard?

The website says XFIRE but doesn't mention SLI.

I would wait for AMD offerings in any case.

Yeah, just read on a website review that it doesn't SLI and that's just dumb IMO. Thanks for your help.

I would avoid dual cards if at all possible. I've got a setup now and its true what they're saying about multi-card support dying out. It seems like more releases dont ship with it, and it takes them longer to get it working with each passing day. And that's if they ever fix it at all. Not to mention its still an unknown whether anyone is going to bother doing it in DX12. Unless you're only playing games 6+ months after release, dual cards is not a great experience

I'd wait for Vega or settle on a single overclocked 1080/1070 instead

Oh yeah, AMD always seems to release dual gpus on a single slot cards a lot so it wouldn't make sense to crossfire Polaris and lose some performance. I wonder how much the Vega cards are going to cost. I think the Polaris is the mainstream card which will perform around 390/390x for under $299 but I'm not sure if it is supposed to replace the 390/390x in the new lineup. Does anyone know which AMD cards match up with Nvidia and which has the better price/performance? I just started getting back into computers and tech after a ten year hiatus and I'm not too familiar with which is which yet.
Also, I've had highend AMD (ATI era) cards before and it always seemed like NVidia cards were more power hungry and packed more punch for some reason. Maybe it's time to switch over.

1 x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16 (x16 mode, gray)
1 x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16 (max at x4 mode)
2 x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x1

I would do 1 card for your board. Check out the 1070 when aftermarket models come out or wait for Polaris.

Thanks for the clarity man. Really appreciate it. I was starting to regret my build. Though I'm leaning towards the 1080 since I got a 6700k instead of the 6600k and I don't want mismatching parts in what is probably my last build for the next 5-7 years. No regrets with this one.

Also hopefully, they are just charging more for the 1080 FE for early adopters. I hope the 599 models oc just as well as the FE.

Nope. You're going to need to wait for Big Pascal and Big Vega to get anywhere close.

Unless you want to deal with multi GPU.

I wouldn't hold my hopes too high for 599 bux 1080. Firstly, it dsnt make sense. Nvidia created such hype for 1080 & benches are also going in their favor. Common sense says partner will ride this hype wave. Why would they price their after market cooler with better performance than FE lower than 699?

Secondly, even if 599 version comes what will be the cooler like? I think you can imagine the temps n noise.
