Can GSM phones bought overseas be used with AT&T?

Related to my other thread.. if I got a GSM phone from Japan could I get it to work with AT&T wireless over here?

If so, what are some good ones to look for?

*edit*

Also in my other thread I noted that it seems that Japan is working on adopting GSM but to date uses an incompatible standard. Grr. :|

tri-band seems to be your best bet... which is 900, 1800, and 1900... 😀 if you can buy one there... chances are you can buy one here too...

I have an opposite question....Can gsm phones bought in the us work overseas, more specificly India?

India uses GSM 900/1800... same as most of Europe and Asia. If you bought an unlocked tri-band phone here... like a Sony Ericsson T68/i or a dual band Nokia 8890 it should work. The US only uses 1900 so if you bought your phone here and you're using it here... it has to be capable of using the other frequencies for it to work abroad... or most of the world at least. There are other phones out there that support multi bands... check howardforums.com for more... 😀 Hope this helps.
