Can Gmail be used to check other email accounts?

I know I could do this with Yahoo's mail site before but I can't seem to find any information that Gmail can do this so I'm assuming the answer is no...

But can Gmail be setup to check a different POP account I have and download the messages into the gmail interface? My other account's webmail site is the worst piece of crap I've ever used.

I don't think you can tell Google to check another POP mail account. Almost all mail services will auto-forward your email from one account to another though. Check with your current provider and have them auto-forward all you email to your gmail account.
