Can firmware be downgraded ?

Some optical drive firmware can be downgraded, and some can't. Generally if downgrades aren't permitted, then any attempt to do so will fail w/o damaging the current f/w. Any such limitations should be posted somewhere on the mfr's web site - check the FAQ as well as the driver DL page.

It all depends on the type of firmware and how it is applied. I doubt that DVD drives can be back tracked - because they are not flashed like BIOS is. But, BIOS flashing (a firmware change) can definitely be re-flashed to the original version. That is why it is wise to let it save a copy of the original before flashing the new one. The same can done to some video cards - they also use a flashing method from a floppy or command prompt. Too bad the DVD drives don't do the same thing. That is one reason why I don't even attampt it on my Pioneer 106S. There is a firmware upgrade, but what I have works, so I just ignore it.

Is this the Pioneer drive thats had all the issues surrounding it? If it is, there IS indeed a save for it that was released... do a search in the hot deals for "laser hot" and that should turn it up for you 🙂
