Can FireWire devices kill the port?

Hello,

this is my Problem: I recently plugged my external harddrive (Maxtor OneTouch FW/USB Combo) into my FireWire port. I wasn't detected. I tried again several times, both with USB and FW, on PC and Powerbook. Didn't work.
Then I followed the advice from Maxtor support and "power-cycled" the drive (Switch PC and drive OFF - detach - attach - switch PC and then drive on). Now the drive works with USB, but all my FireWire ports (Powerbook and PC) are now dead, i.e. other devices won't be detected either, but the Device Manager (Win) and System Profiler (Mac) still list the FW port.

Questions: What may have caused this? Is there a solution? (And what's the effect of "power-cycling", anyway?

Thanks in advance!
