can enamel be watersanded?

I'm painting this model car ( I know this stuff is for kids, but its spring break and it relaxes me) I sprayed the body with some enamel, and I was just wondering if it would be safe to watersand it with some fine grit paper before spraying the clear coat?

Any help/tips would be appreciated!
