Can electrical tape be used in the place of solder?

I know, weird question, but I'm no soldering expert and I really don't have the cash to spend on professional service. I have a wire that I have to use to connect two points on a motherboard. Though the instructions say to solder the wire to both points, I don't really want to risk screwing anything up and, for that matter, I don't need the wire in place indefinitely (I'll probably eventually remove it - eventually being a year or two from now).

Rather than soldering the wire to both points, could I electrical tape the area around the points, then cut back the sheathing on the wire and electrical tape it tightly to where the solder joint should have been? Again, I'm a noob when it comes to soldering, but my understanding was that soldering just made a joint - wouldn't this achieve the same purpose? I realize that it'd be more prone to the wire coming loose, but I can make sure it's taped in tight.

Thanks in advance,

Shawn

soldering is very easy... you put the wire where you want it, and melt a bit of solder there, then it hardens when it cools and its attached... a cheapo soldering iron and some solder should cost you like $10 or $15 at radio shack.

just make sure you dont overheat what your soldering.. the iron is used to melt the solder, not to heat the board.

if your going to try anything with taping, you just gotta make sure the metal has a good solid conection from wire to the point on the board.

i havent checked in years for easy soldering techniques... you might try a place like radio shack and see if they have any easy type of solder paste or some other nonsense

Well, that's what I thought when I tried to mod my Playstation with a mod chip last year - I ended up purchasing another one a few weeks later :) I just don't have the steady hands needed to perform the operation, especially when the joints need to be so close together.

Along those lines, does anyone know of a place that can professionally solder in the Dallas area?

You are kidding, right. I don't think that the electrical tape will give you a steady enough connection. It will work and then five minutes later it won't have any juice, not that i've ever had this problem and know from experience, because that would be foolish and i'm not that. No, I had to solder mine eventually.

Like said before, just dont heat it up too much. I solder anything and everything that i need to fix. I had a charger once that was negative on the inside of the stem and posotive outside - i needed the opposite. It's as easy as just flopping the wires!

Well, it might work, as long as the wire maintains contact with the solder point. The problem is that solder points are so small that it is nearly impossible to make it work. If you go to Radio Shack, I thnk they have a heatless solder which is kinda like a conductive glue, or something. Try that.
