Can ECS K7S5A and Athlon XP work with PC100 memory?

Hi,

I have PC100 card from my old computer and I'm not sure whether I could use it with ECS K7S5A motherboard and 133MHz FSB processor. Currently I don't want to buy DDR. Can anybody say if this motherboard supports 133MHz proc / 100MHz mem configuration, may be with nonstandard BIOS? Is it possible to overclock PC100 to PC133 using less agressive timings?

Thanks

I built a system exactly with ECS K7S5A, Athlon XP1600 with PC100 memory. You will be overclocking your PC100 to work as a 133. I did not have a problem but, give it a try. I currently have both slots filled with 128x2 PC100 sdram at 133. You will know from the start if your ram is having problems with the clock speed. Lock ups/freezes.

Welcome to the Anandtech forums 🙂 As MiklosMillora pointed out, PC100/133 runs great in the K7S5A and you don't need to flash the bios or anything. It would be a good idea to start out with the 133/100 speed available in the "CPU PnP setup" option on the bios menu atleast until you've finished installing all the software. Then if you want to see if your ram likes 133FSB(as mentioned, it should do fine) go for it!

im running 1 stick of PC100 and 1 stick of PC133

absolutely no problem whatsoever...

the chip is xp1700
