I've read as a passing comment in a thread or two around the net that hot swapping or loose DVI connections can short and fry components. That?s a big loss to take when it happens to a new video card or a flat screen panel. I don?t believe it?s that common but like filling up your car with the engine running it may hold the same potential for disaster.

Any one know what the official spec is for DVI and what would make this possible?

I haven't heard of anything like this, and a quick Google search doesn't turn up any horrific warnings about hot-plugging DVI devices. Some devices (not PC video cards) may need to be power-cycled to detect a DVI display connected while the power is on.

AFAIK, it's safe. The voltage/current in these things is really low; I doubt they would "fry" anything even if somehow incorrectly plugged.

According to Anandtech this is the potential damage that cables can do (DVI being the least harmful and most recommended it seems, since analog suffers so much from interference from other cords nearby).

Heres the Article Quote in Display Section:

The primary rule of monitor cables is this: make sure they are totally plugged in and screwed down when connected. A connector that is slightly askew will result in a poor signal and ultimately damage the monitor and cable. Ideally speaking, we should all completely unplug both the monitor and the computer before connecting the VGA connector.

My best assumption from what youve heard is that those or radical results, being the most extreme that would happen.
