can DVD-rom read both + -?

Somebody asked me if i'd like him to burn my pictures on a DVD+ or DVD-. I thought that DVD-rom can read both formats or am i wrong??

I *think* that DVD- format is more compatible but I'm not sure.

I'd never exprience a problem with reading a DVD(my BENQ will read anything that I throw in there). Generally speaking, the + and - issue is only limited on the process of burning I think..

If you use Nero and your DVD burner supports it, you can burn your DVD+R blanks to come out as DVD-ROM format.

but how about reading.. he's burning like a 100 copies and asking ppl if they want + or -

Which DVD-ROM drive do you have? Any PC DVD-ROM drive should have no problem reading DVD+ or DVD-. The comment I made for the DVD-ROM format's for video playback compatibility on set top DVD players.

BQ1610, but that's not the issue. The guy is burning the pictures for 30 different ppl so the DVDs will be read by 30 different DVD-roms. I'm trying to figure out if the format matters (+ or -), see if there're any compatibility issues if all these ppl receive a DVD-+.

It most definitely can be an issue for some DVD players only support + or - but that is now much rarer but I would still burn + and some - but mostly one or the other and only worry if there is feedback concerning them.

I love when my sentence structure becomes convoluted. :laugh:

If you bought the DVD-ROM drive in that last 3 years, the answer is almost always "yes". If it is older, like a 4X or slower, the chances are higher that it will not work with burned formats. You can go to videohelp.com and search their compatibility guide if you know the specific brand and model.

I think the best format for compatiblity is -, unless you switch the book type to DVD ROM for + discs, which makes burnt discs pretend they are pressed.

Some non-burning DVD-Rom drives may have problems reading + discs. My work PC which is less than 2 years old has a DVD-Rom drive that will not read a + disc. Of course its a POS compaq, but not all readers, even recent ones, will read a + disc, and in some instances a - disc may be unreadable. I have seen a few laptops that have DVD drives that will not read anything, +/- only "retail" burned DVDs.
