Can dogs handle spiral staircases?

Wacky question, I know. My Fiancé are thinking of buying this house that has a spiral staircase. We eventually want to get a dog as well, but she says dogs can't deal with the spiral staircases (though i think they can, but I don't know).

...Anyone know FOR SURE if they can or can't?

Thanks.

Ask her if she thinks it would be as hard as ..say...pulling a sled with 500 pounds on it thru a long night in the arctic tundra.;)

i figure a big dog might have trouble... spirals are usually too narrow for them.

I think a medium sized dog could make it alright. The dog would have to have long enough legs to be able to make a steep climb like that. I would think that the second floor would just have to be 'off limits'. I'm sure a dog could get hurt pretty bad from falling down a staircase like that.

I have spirl staircases for both the upstairs and downstairs. I have 2 pugs that don't seem to mind running up and down them. They stay near the wall because the steps are wider there... of course so does my wife and I. :)

Jeezus. This isn't your old granny, its a dog. The dog will go up and down the stairs better than you will (unless it has hip dysplacia<sp?>).

It depends on the individual dog and the age. my dog wouldn't be able to handle it anymore but before, no problem. I've seen dogs go up and down near vertical "stairs" that are closer to ladders really but with wider steps

yeah, I really don't think it'd be that much different from a normal staircase with most dogs. I think that in general, the bigger the dog, the more trouble they have with stairs. Or more specifically, the more trouble they have going *down* the stairs. Imagine if you *had* to walk down the stairs two at a time.... it'd be pretty scary. If the dog is small enough that it can only straddle two stairs at a time, they probably won't have a problem with it. It depends somewhat on certain paramaters, such as how wide the steps are, and whether the steps are 'open' flying in the air or 'closed' like they have a wall around one side of them. We used to live in a place with a very narrow, 'floating' spiral staircase, and our dog (miniature dachsund) really didn't like to use it. I don't think he would have had a problem if the rails were more solid, at least on his level.

It's pretty funny watching him go down even a normal, straight staircase.... he has to take it basically one step at a time, front legs down, then back legs down, sort of hopping each half of his body down each step, with his body oriented so that he can stand on each step (longwise). Unless he gets in a hurry, in which case, he does both simultaneously, and sometimes he loses it and falls toward the bottom of the staircase... it's kind of funny. Going *up* the stairs isn't a problem at all, but going down can be an adventure :)

I know two golden retrieivers can do it.
One doesn't like it though, but he can do it. He's scared of everything though ....

Small/medium sized dogs can handle them ewasily.
