I know someone who's ripped about 5-10 dvd's and their sony 16x dvd drive died after only a few months. Could there be a relationship here or is it just bad luck on the hardware end?

:(

Encoding directly from the DVD Drive CAN damage the drive (shorten it's life significantly), but you have to be doing it a whole lot.

It was just ripping and the encoding is done from the vob files, so it wasn't burning up the drive for hours.

This person is borrowing his sisters to replace it for now so that's cool that its not a decss thing. :)
