Can decent thermal paste really have this big an effect?

yesterday I replaced some cheap thermal paste with Artic Silver 5. Used to idle around low 50's, now its in the mid 30's... My rooms about 5 degrees Fahrenheit cooler, and only termal paste was junk, but still, is this reasonable?

Barton 2500@182x12 1.7 volt. Coolermaster aero7 HSF.

edit: New PSU as well, Forton 350w i beleive.

I've always understood there to be a good bit of difference from crappy thermal paste to good thermal paste. But I wonder if there'd be any improvement from AS3 to AS5..???

Thats too big of a temp jump to have been caused by switching thermal pastes. What probably happened was that your HSF didn't have proper contact with the cpu, and when put on the AS5 you also put the HSF on properly, giving you that huge temp difference.

Agreed I think I noticed a 3~5 degree difference between crappy paste and AS5. Usually the AS5 also takes about a few days to settle in, not overnight.
