When I tried out google ads, I made about a dollar a day. You have to keep traffic flowing though. I average 30,000 hits a month with 3,000 unique visitors. So roughly $300 a year...enough to cover the server bill lol.

Yeah, it has to be useful to some target group. I started doing Mac articles and my bandwidth shot through the roof. I wrote a couple upgrade guides for computers like the Mac Mini and the MacBook; those get a lot of visitors for a period of time until the new machines are released. When Apple went Intel, I wrote an Intel version of the guide and got a lot of visitors again. Just some food for thought ;)

It can be a good source of income if your website becomes a sensation.

Or it can be an alright source of income if your website is mediocre. The key is to get some volunteers to write updates for you. You receive the ad revenue but don't have to work at all. Or you can work extra hard and try to bring in more visitors.

I used to run an old hardware review site, Hardware Pub, and we once published an article on how to make color Half-Life sprays. The company that hosted our site actually called me on the phone and warned me of the huge spike in bandwidth. It stayed popular for sooo long.

So yeah, find a niche, publish something that's useful and informative to a lot of people. How to guides are very popular.

if you build content...they will come...

It's all about content. Having a slick looking site helps, but it will only last so long. If you keep your site updated and have fresh content, you can be very successful. The more you put into it, the more you will get out of it.

Some helpful sites:

The Admin Zone - online community and forum help, but much of the info relates to many business models.

Sitepoint - a great resource for site planning, marketing, and legalities.

WebHosting Talk - search WHT for topics on marketing, promotion, and related issues. A very active, informative forum.

You will find many other helpful links on these sites too. Doing your research will really pay off.

just like everything else in life.........if it were that easy, everyone would be doing it.

for a strictly informative site, i think it'd be pretty tough as you'd have to rely heavily on ads. not impossible, but to make $30K a year, you'd better have a great plan.

Yes it's possible and content is king.

I know someone from another forum who started their own blog/forums and make $300/mo from Google ads.

services generate revenue.

the sale, resale, and futures of raw materials and manufactured goods generate revenue

a website is just a portal for advertising and support

in and of itself it practically does ntohing unless you are an inline vender in which case it provides a medoum within which to do busienss, but it is not necessaruly TEH BUSOINESS
