I have a 3000+ venice which is running in my machine. Short of removing the cpu, can cpu-z identify the stepping. When I open cpu-z there is a section saying stepping 0 revision dh-e3. Does this mean its E3?

Yes. That does mean that its a E3 core. But the only way to get the stepping is to remove the CPU. No S/W will be able to read that of the CPU.

Its etched in the headspreader on the top of the CPU generally... Unless you have a Socket 603/604 Xeon CPU, in which case Intel finds it funny to make you remove the CPU to check on the bottom :)

Edit: You'll have to wipe away some thermal grease generally, which means you'll have to remove all the grease and reapply it for best cooling performance again.
