Can cleaning your CDRW drive increase writing speed?

My Plextor 8/4/32 drive is now only able to burn at 4X! Do you think using a CD cleaner might get me back up to 8X? I've only had the drive for MAYBE 2yrs. What's up with that?! :|

Sorry, let me be a little more clear. I'm talking about writing to a CD-R not CD-RW. My drive can only do 4X max using rewrite, but it should be able to burn at 8X writing once. It just recently (about 2-3month) started failing at 8X.

I doubt it would help.. It has to be a problem with your software. If your using nero, in Options set it to Max speed.

no no cleaning the dirve wouldnt increase its speed a 4X more it could but not even a 1x it got to be a software pro

Sh!t, it is my burner!! I tried different media and the damn thing still fails. I've tried Nero, Adaptec and MusicMatchJukeboc (MP3->CD) and they all fail at 8X! :| This freakin' sucks! I'm not going to stand for this 4X burning crap for too much longer. I might have to get another drive (16X burner)! Less than 2yrs for a drive to start losing it, kind of sucks (well it REALLY sucks)! :| I might have to go the Yamaha way the next time around.
