Can chipset driver make my boot time worse

All

The CD that came with my mobo was a version 3.6 nForce driver set. So I built my system with that, and the OS was loading very fast and everything was smooth.

Then I upgraded my drivers from Nvidia website to ver 6.66 and now my boot time went up. Also my HD makes a lot of clatter while XP is loading.

Have SATA drives -- not RAID or anything.

Thre's one way to find out. Roll Back your drivers and see if the original performance comes back. If it comes back, which I seriously doubt, then maybe the drivers are incompatible with your hardware. But if it doesn't come back then something else got installed during your driver upgrade. You might want to either clean slate the system or maybe at least restore your system to a point before the upgrade.
