Can carrying a laptop a certain way be harmful

I was just wondering if grabbing my laptop and carrying it vertically, or sideways could be harmful. I know that if a regular internal hardrive is shaken too much or moved the wrong way, it can ruin it, i was wondering if laptop hardrives are different in this way, or if they can still be physically damaged. Just curious.

i wouldnt worry about the hard drive as much as the screen. you dont get the best grip holding it vertically and dropping it is very possible.

Just don't squeeze the screen as hard you can and you'll be fine.

If the laptop is off (or standby or hibernate), the HDD head is parked. Most HDD's can take a lot of damage when OFF, just don't try it out k ;)

Yeah when the heads are parked (turned off) it can take upwards of 80g's. Probably says on the top of the drive how much abuse it can take.

Carrying it on your back while scuba diving would probably be harmful, anything else should be fine.

One thing for sure--Be careful when moving a laptop with the screen open. I would hold the laptop on both sides and also secure the display from moving. I believe that's how the hinge on my old eMachines behemoth (M6805) ended up cracking--I held the laptop on one side and did not support the screen.

avoid keeping it in your bum.... is something someone juvenille would say.... I would avoiid carrying magnets to start with, then avoid squishing the screen. Some laptops have a better build than others (IBM, panasonice, etc) and can handle a lot more man hadling. Something like a Compaq has a much cheaper build and should be treated with kid gloves.

Every laptop carrying case I have seen puts it in a vertical attitude. It really doesn't matter. What is bad is squeezing pressure on it when packed.

Thanks for the tips. Ill stay away from the one hand carrying. Ill only store it in my bum in an emergency and if i go scuba diving, ill call one of you to keep it safe for me. If the hinges brake off, well the screen will make a nifty placemat.

The alternative to vertical would be to buy a pizza delivery bag around with you :)
