Can cable DVRs be used without a cable connection?

Friend of mine asked me to help her make some costumes /keep her motivated entertained and suggested the I bring over some stuff to watch. She doesn't have a DVD player and only has a VHS deck so I figured i'd bring over my cable box to watch some recorded shows. Would that work? Tivo would let me do that but I'm not sure if cable requires a cable connection.

I'd bring my dvd player over but she's not sure what sort of hookups the tv has and Coax (cable box) is a good standard.

I'm too lazy to unplug mine and test it, but I'm guessing it will work file.

For that matter, how about you unplug yours and see if it works?

Yeah, all you had to do was disconnect the coax to test. I swear people are starting to rely too much on the internet these days.

Does not work - it gets stuck at the boot screen. I tried running it with the cable connected then unplugging the coax and that works fine. But I don't think I'll use a UPS for the commute :)
