My daughter has an msi ati rs480mb. Flashed bios today using their online in windows thing. Noticed after that dvd/cdr player recognizes dvd's but not cdr's. Can't even use the xp disk to boot. Don't have a floppy to easily try old bios, but is this possible it is a bios flash? Am in a bit of a hurry so it seems either new mb or new dvd player. Thanks if anyone has had this experience.

Have you cleared your bios(CMOS) since the flash. If not give that a try. You may want to go into the bios and record the setting if you?re not familiar with what they may be currently set to. After the bios has been cleared see if the problem still exist. If the bios was a significant update It can indeed effect the way the hardware functions.

If you don?t want to use the battery jumper on the motherboard you may be able to also clear the CMOS by holding down the insert key when you turn on the PC. You can also go into the bios and choose the option load bios defaults. That?s not as complete a wipe, but may also work.

Remember to record you settings if you not readily familiar with how they are set currently.

What you have is most likely an unfortunate coincidence. The DVD/CD ROM drive has two lasers - one for DVD and the other for CD. If one works and the other does not, that is indication of a hardware failure in the drive. BIOS flashing won't touch peripheral hardware.

Think new DVD/CD player or burner.

Thanks for the replies guys. I did clear the cmos and it seemed to help a bit, but bought new burner and problem gone. Now can read disks my daughter previously thought corrupted. Didn't know they had 2 lasers, thanks.
