Hi all,
I am trying to construct a comp with an Athlon XP 2100, Asus A7V333, and Antec TruPower 430 watt PSU. Everything was progressing fine, having put in all components (drives and such) and properly connecting them, until I got to the point where it was time to power up the machine. Upon pressing the power button on the computer case, all that could be heard, was a faint high pitched, dog-whistle like whine from the PSU. Absolutely no power was flowing through the board as indicated by the lack of lights and spinning fans. I then spent some time reconnecting everything and attempted to power up a second time. This time the same, however, after about a minute and a half, the interior of the powersupply started to make a horrible fizzling sound, a sudden flash of light and finally an awful smelling smoke. That was the end of that.
I then picked up a cheap generic powersupply from my local computer part store and connected it into the system, powered up and witnessed less drama, but still no power to the mobo. No high pitched whine was heard, but a small bit of smoke could be seen coming from the cheapo generic PSU almost immediately. Needless to say the computer is still powerless and I am left answerless.
For the experienced out there, does this sound like a mobo problem, seeing as how we have now gone through two PSU?s without success, and is the mobo even capable of bar-bequeing the PSU as it has, or is this the sign of a larger complication?!
I am having difficulty troubleshooting, given the either/or situation (PSU or Mobo being the culprit) and don?t want to have to roast my way through several more PSU's, not to mention many more dollars to identify the problem. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. Please let me know if there is any more information that I might be able to provide. Thanks again.
