Can anyone tell me what's wrong with my DVD-ROM drive?

I'm using a Creative DVD-ROM 2240E which was part of the package of the Creative PC-DVD Dxr Encore 2X. I have been using it for quite some time now without any problems at all. But just a few days ago, the DVD drive failed to read any discs at all, whether it's a CD-ROM, an audio CD or a DVD. I pop a disc in and the drive scans it for a while, but stops prematurely. Therefore, the computer regards it as not having read ny disc at all.

If I click on My COmputer and click on the D: drive (which is the drive letter assigned to the DVD drive) with the disc inside, it reads out "D:\is not accessible. The device is not ready. [Retry] [Cancel]"

I go to Device Manager in System Properties (from the Control Panel) but it lists the CDROM as the Creative DVD-ROM DVD2240E as working just fine. If I go to the drive properties, Device Status is read "This device is working properly." In "Settings", "Disconnect", "Auto Insert Notification" and "DMA" are checked. Even when I tried playing with these settings, the drive would still refuse to read any drive.

Now, here's the funny thing. When I try to scan the drive with Norton Antivirus 2001, it gives out an error message "Unable to access drive D:. The drive is locked by a disk utility. Scan again later when the disk is no longer locked." Hence, I tried looking for any disk utility programs that might have accidentally locked my drive. I checked Norton Utilities, System Information, etc. but fail to find anything.

I can only therefore think of 2 possible scenarios.
1. The drive's optical sensor is kaput and therefore tricking Norton Antivirus to regard it as locked.
2. There really is a disk utility locking it but only I use the computer and I have not changed any kind of settings the day before the drive went KO.

So, anyone out there able to discern what really is going on?

I would guess that the problem there is the optical sensor. It's probably dusty and can't read whatever you put in the drive, all though the drive works fine. The same thing happened to me with a Cd-rom. The only solution to this problem is to either get one of those drive cleaning kits from Comp USA or BestBuy or other store and clean out your drive, or physically open it up and clean the sensor with a q-tip and some alcohol.
