Can anyone tell me what msgsrv32 is?

Got a HP Pavilion 9680 that's just been run through the Recovery CD to format and reinstall the original software like Day 1. But in trying to get it to connect to my home network I set the Network Properties and say "Yes" to the restart box, and it hangs indefinitely with the hourglass. C-A-D tells me msgsrv32 is not responding, and I eventually end up having to do a restart by turning the whole thing off with the power button.

Any help? Before I go through the complete Recovery again, just wanted to ask.

one way to fix the prob. is to get some one like me to email you that file and then put it in windows\system.......then reboot.....what windows version you runnin??.........the other way is what you said.....reinstall the whole thing....

Hint: For all these unknown files or processes you find, it works well to put them into Google and find info about them.

Actually the computer is my daughter's. So I came down to my own to send my question. Just now I went back up and rebooted again and it came up just fine, connected to the Internet just fine, no errors. Hmm ... I will let the sleeping pooch lie for now.

I did a Yahoo search and did find something that explained it some, I guess

Msgsrv32.exe is a program (Windows 32-bit
Message Server) that performs several background functions, including the following:

Load installable Windows drivers at startup and unload them at
shutdown.

Run the shell program (usually
Explorer.exe) and re-run the shell
if it fails to respond.
*
Mediate Plug and Play messages among various parts of the operating
system.
*
Coordinate automatic responses to Setup programs. This includes
checking whether a Setup program has improperly overwritten Windows files, and optionally
restoring the Windows versions of those files.
*
Display the initial logon dialog box if networking is enabled.
*
Play the system startup and shutdown sounds.

Not sure how exactly that applies to the Network Properties and its restart message when you clock OK, but it's plausible that it does, and whatever wasn't working now does.
