Can anyone tell me what is up with this...

TortoiseSVN. Someone installed it, and committed some of your files to a repository. If you have no idea what this means, then someone is stealing your files.

Hmm. thanks Crusty, thats a scary thought.
I installed a bunch of software from the Canon cd to use my friends Canon DSLR camera a few weeks ago which seems about when all this started. Anything on that disk that might cause this?

I really have no idea, whenever I see those checkmarks and !'s all over the place I assume it's SVN because the older versions of it look 100% like that. The newer ones have bigger icons, but it looks like it's affecting img files on your computer. Does it happen everywhere on your drive or just your Desktop?

actually just on the desktop it seems. I have mozy backup installed but it never did that before. the subversion icons do look the same basically from what i can find on google images as you said, crusty.

If you right click and select properties, any new tabs show up?

nothing that doesn't seem inherent to Windows

It's almost certainly Mozy.

It's highly unlikely that a source control system like Tortoise SVN would be installed on your system with other software.

Yep, those are the ones. The subversion icons look slightly different but those in the webpage are the same.

Thank you everyone for helping me figure this out!

edit- went into mozy options and disabled the icon overlays and now the checkmarks are gone.
