Can anyone tell me what is going on here....

Well i ran some tests on my system, because i seem to be experience huge bursts of lag. And here is a screenshot of what i came up with:

Does that mean i am experiencing packet loss? I really dont know much about highly technical networking, but it looks like the request clears my router, and then adelphia has problems.

Can someone tell me what is going on here. I am trying to play RTCW:ET and BF2, and a response time of 1298ms makes it near impossible to play. (My kill/death ratio in BF2, as a result is .5...thats right 1 kills for every 2 deaths )

(Firmware has been updated on the router, all applications that could tie my bandwidth up are closed during that)

Well i ran a ping -t command right now and discovered something odd:

I timed it between the times it does this.

It jumps in the response time, and times out exactly every minute.

At 3:30:15 it recorded a response time of 1274ms and then the next request timed out.
At 3:31:15 it recorded a response time of [some large number]ms and then the next request timed out
At 3:32:15 ""

Is this at all strange?

Additionally i logged into my modem's diagnostic page and found this in the logs:

060105181552 7-Information H501.6 HFC: TRC SYNC Recovery OK
060105181550 3-Critical H501.4 HFC: LOST TRC SYNC- trying to recover
060105181550 7-Information H501.12 HFC: FEC LOCK recovery OK
060105181550 3-Critical T5.0 SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - Loss of Sync

Only the log is filled with it. I ran a google search for a good hour, and i still dont quite know what to make of it.

I have also pinged my modem and my router; everything is the way it is supposed to be.

Looks to me like your modem is failing or your ISP is having problems. I'd unplug ALL cables (including power) from the modem for at least 5-10 minutes then plug it all back in and try again. If you still get the same errors, it's time to call your ISP.

the time outs you see in your tracert are more than likely a router or firewall that will not respond to ICMP packets. even though you can ping doesn;t always mean you can tracert
unfortunately high ping times, without being able to tracert, don't tell you much
it looks like adelphia responds within 100ms in the first hop. what happens after that is anyones guess. It could be the server you are pinging, or a route somewhere between you and that server.
hard to tell

i just did a ping on the 70.86.55.43 address, and i am seeing all sorts of weird timeings too mostly under 50ms, but some over 1000ms and a few in the negative range.
i am on a 6mb bellsouth DSL connection
it would appear that server is not a reliable test of your connection

Well this happens to anything i ping.

I tried Yahoo and got the same result. I think that there is something wrong with my cable modem 🙁

a packet sniffer will load on your machine, and catch all network traffic. it is pretty advanced stuff, but it would tell you a lot more about what was going on.
try opening your network adapter "status" window. just stare at the bytes sent and recieved for a while, and see if maybe you have traffic flowing in or out that you don't know about

Well i am away from my computer (ie: Out of state with some relatives until late Sunday). I will have to get you guys the screenshot then. However, I did notice a lot of one error message when i ran it last time. There was a lot of TCP Checksum incorrect or something like that.

I dunno, i will have to let you guys know when i return home.

-Kevin

Ok well i have it running for 2 minutes, but how/where do i upload the file. The results are much too big for one screenshot.

-Kevin

Nevermind, i have 2 screenshots here:

I dont know what to make of them but, besides my main question of the thread, what is that ARP broadcast doing in there.

I wasn't aware that should be happening on a protected wired network. It, if i am interpreting it right, is someone broadcasting a message over my network. Is that correct?

looks pretty clean, except for all of the UPNP traffic.
Unless you absolutely need universal plug and play, disable it in the services section of the control panel (under universal plug and play)

probably won't make a ton of difference, but every little bit helps

What is universal plug and play? I know what the original Plug And Play is but what is this service doing?

What about all the TCP Checksum errors? Isn't there a reason for concern there?

-Kevin

the tcp checksum errors are usually a result of capturing packets with ethereal.
i would ignore them

UPNP is more or less plug and play for networking.
some routers and a lot of newer media extenders (including the xbox 360) support it.

Oh ok 🙂

The last concern is this:
060110001336 7-Information H501.6 HFC: TRC SYNC Recovery OK
060110001333 3-Critical H501.4 HFC: LOST TRC SYNC- trying to recover
060110001333 7-Information H501.12 HFC: FEC LOCK recovery OK
060110001333 3-Critical T5.0 SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - Loss of Sync

That is taken from my modem's log file. The log is actually filled with those, and it happens every minute (the same way my lag out does). In fact, recently it have been failing to recover, and the modem has to completely restart to function again.

Should i call my ISP? If so what do i ask them to ping of mine from their side? What else should i request, in other words, is there anything else they can do from the WAN that will help me solve this problem?

-Kevin

based on what i have read on google, those messages are indicative of a modem error, might be worth checking into
