Can anyone tell me how the X800XL performs when playing Chaos Theory...

I played the demo and finally I find a game that makes me wish I had a better video card as it was noticablly performing like crap on my GF4400, especially when night vision is turned on. I was thinking of holding out till R520 comes out but to be honest I rather not spend 600+ on a video card like some other nuts so I figured this may be a good bet till I have a better idea as to what I type of hardware I will need when Unreal 3's engine is set to release.

just as a note...you will be better off with SM3.0, so buy nVidia now or spend 600+ later...

true...i completely forgot about the threads I read that the only options available in Chaos Theory are DX8 shaders or SM3. Thanks for the reminder. Guess I'll just wait it out.

I haven't tried Chaos Theory on my 6800gt, but from what I heard the SM3 path makes the game run like crap no matter how fast of hardware you have. That said, I played some of the demo on my x800xt-pe and had a bit of framerate issues as well. I'm guessing that, like the previous Splinter Cell games and many other Unreal engine games, a beefy CPU and system bus goes a long way. So if your other compnents are dated, you might consider upgradeing those and seeing if that does your ti4400 any better.

I have a AMD 2700 and Asus Nforce 2 board. I won't upgrade unless I'm upgrading the vid card as well.

Lazy developers can't code a game right. Why is it that Max Payne 2 ran fine on my old p4 1.6ghz with 256mb SDR ram, and a 32mb SDR gf2 MX, using high detail setings (no AA/AF though)? Even UT2003 ran fine on it. And now a x800xt-pe can't run a new DX9 game well? Even at 1600*1200 + AA/AF, a $400+ card better run the game smooth, else either the card is crap or the game is crap.

Heh, I just said "bit of framerate issues", and the rest of my sytstem isn't really up to snuff with my card so I consder that understandable. I'm sure I could turn down the resoltion a bit or upgrade to an A64 and that bit of framerate trouble would be gone.

It is a demo, remember, so it does not reflect the real game. PLUS, there will probably be patches to fix some bad framerate.

have you seen far cry demo with the 6xxx series? it looks like ass. the real game, with a patch, fixes that, so you never know.

I would get a 6800 or 6800gt, the 6800nu can softmod to a GT, and the GT can OC to an ultra

if you wanna play chaos theory, use a 6800 ultra for best performance (maybe) or wait for R520 mid-range cards.

I dont think you should judge card performance on this game, as it probably isn't coded correctly, but then again, the SC games kill your computer.

Oh please, 600+ later? if you buy an 800XL with 2.0++ now you will save $100 and it will last just as long as a 6800GT.

I think you are getting demo and beta confused, a demo is intended to refect the real game.

Yeah, the Far Cry demo was crap with my 6800NU. Actual game worked perfectly fine tho.
I don't recall the Chaos Theory demo being very slow either, but then I didn't have FRAPS running and it wasn't a very fast paced game.

It performs relatively well with SM 3.0, though you'll have to disable HDR.

I'll pass on both SC:Game of the month and the 6800 thanks. Any company on the take that programs in a deficiency for money sucks.

It won't play Splinter Cell above SM1.1 though.

heh i know my friends secretly hating himself for buying a slightly dodgy x800xt pe instead of a 6800ultra after he saw farcry with the HDR, and now SC:CT with SM3 looks better on mine than it does his too.

i know alot of people find SM3 to make things unplayable, but i played thru the entire farcry with HDR @ 12x10 and 4xaf on my 6800gt, and SC:CT demo with everything on maximum ran beautifully. and i wouldt say i have a particularly beefy gaming computer

I agree. Now replaying Farcry with HDR just to enjoy the graphics. I play it@ 1280x1024 4xAF also everything maximun and with the CPU OC'd I get some pretty good gameplay in Sprinter Cell CT with SM3.0 and HDR everything max @1280x1024 4xAF also. Looks fastantic!!
