Can anyone tell me how many products were recalled last year?

I have no idea what the true number is, and I doubt there is any one source that will list all products from all companies from all countries. We can give a rough estimate though. Each issue of Consumer Reports lists the major consumer products that American's might buy that were recalled each month. There are roughly a dozen recalled products in each monthly issue. Thus 12x12 = 144. Of course that magizine doesn't list all recalls (I don't remember seeing any meat recalls listed). So lets triple that number to be on the safe side: 144*3 = 432. Those are products that American's might get a hold of. I assume that companies in 3rd world countries probably don't do many recalls. So of the remaining countries, lets assume they produce 5x more recalls. So we have a total of (5+1)*432 = 2592 products that are recalled. Of course these are really rough guesses so I'll round it to two and a half thousand products worldwide.

I honestly don't know if any of my assumptions were accurate, but the final number is larger than 250 and smaller than 25000. 😉

You might want to start with the gov't entity that does most consumer recalls, http://www.cpsc.gov/.

The Dept. of Transportation does cars, trucks, etc. Drugs are handled by the FDA.

cpsc.gov is useless, I checked that out yesterday and it had no statistics. I love statistics 🙁
