Okay, there are a few cards that I've wanted ever since they got out and I finally got 2 of them after all these years :)

I recently acquired a 128mb R350 based BBA Radeon 9800 Pro for working on a friends PC and the only catch weas that the fan was dead : / So being the Zip Tie using, Power Drill wielding spare parts pack rat of a fool I am I put an Athlon XP HSF on the card and headed off to see how much hell I can put this card through before it gives up the ghost on me :)

After the mod HSF mod and with no vMods at all I was finally able to get the card to a 100% stable 425/768 and no this is not the R360 core 9800 :) It's the good ole fashioned R350 true 9800 Pro :)

Update 09/13/2007 : I just ran a few benchmarks using the HL2 : Lost Coast Video Stress Test and heres what I got @ 1024x768 with default setting and no AA or AF.

Here are other speeds I benched it at :

378/338 ( Stock ) : 39.4

435/385 : 41.7

445/390 : 41.8

446/386 : 42

450/386 : 42

446/800 : 31.9 :/

450/800 : 31.7 :(

It's obvious at this point that 386mhz is the sweet spot on the mem :)

I was just wondering how you other 9800 Pro users and abusers fared with your stock voltage OverClocking endeavors compared to mine :)

Before you reply please remember to include if your card has the R350 or R360 core, what kind of cooling it's using and if it's volt modded :)

I'm interested to know what the temps are like on the card with the processor HSF. Unfortunately, my 9800 Pro died after six months without an overclock due to a bad fan, so I can't offer up much help.

I ran my 350 (not volt-modded) at 400/360, at first with a VGA Silencer Rev. 2 and later with the updated ATI Silencer... the card is now pretty much dead, apparently memory issues :|. Lasted me a solid three years, good enough I guess.

I'd say it's a decent OC. I had a r360 w/ a zalman vf700 running at 440mhz, not sure if the newer core revision helped or not. Sometimes I wish I hadn't sold mine, that was one hell of a card back in the day.

I just went to my mom's for dinner, so I tried to test out her 9800 pro. I tried 3dmark 06, but it wouldn't work b/c it wasn't a 2500+ or greater chip. Then I tried 3dmark 05, but it wouldn't work b/c mom's tbird doesn't support sse instructions. THEN I tried downloading 3dmark 03 but my wife made us leave to put the rugrat to bed. Grrrr...

I'm still running a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro R360 (Masscool/Sytrin KuFormula VF1 Plus cooler) in my wife's machine.

To tell you the truth, when this card was in my machine, I never could find a limit. Every time I tried to max it out, and it got into the ridiculous range, I would chicken out... :)

Anyway, how do you know you have a R350 core?

The only way you can tell is by doing a 'visual' on it! Utilities won't pick it up...

Here's a pic of mine - I mean my wife's R360... :D

I guess I could have magically will'd the AMD Heatsink onto the 9800 but there was no fun in that so I removed the stock heatsink on it, put some arctic cleaner on it followed by arctic purrifier and voila :) It said R350 right on the core :p

Yeah...

The Radeon 9800 Pro was great - the 55' Chevy of AGP cards - and still has its uses for non-gamers on vintage macines, Mac users, but...

The stock ATI reference fan SUCKED!!!

The reference fan WILL stop working after 2-3 years of normal use - usually with no warning - no noise - no nothing!

I can't tell you how many times I've heard this story! That's probably what happened to the ppl in this thread...

I bought my A++, mint condition (original box, sales receipt, etc) on eBay. It was 2 years-old and was in perfect condition. However, the first thing I did was get rid of the reference fan and replace it was a VF-1 Plus and added RAM sinks...

To whom it may concern: If you LOVE your 9800 Pro, dump the stock fan before it's too late!!! It's a ticking timebomb... Guaranteed!

You'll be sitting there one day and the screen will go goofy on you - pixels going crazy, et cetera, and...

Boom! Bye Bye... :D
