Can anyone stomach another Radeon question?

I have just put together a new system that includes a Radeon 32MB DDR. It is running stable in the windows environment, but locks up within a few minutes when running games (To test the system, I have installed halflife and starcraft, and have also tried running the demo that comes with the radeon, all with the same result, lockup).

The system consists of:
FIC ZA11 mainboard
128MB Crucial CAS2 dram
WD 30GB HDD
Enlight Case w/250W powersupply
generic 48x CD ROM
Retail 750 Thunderbird w/heatsink provided in package
Radeon 32MB DDR
ps2 keyboard, serial mouse, older ibm monitor

I initially installed Windows 98 (not SE), and have since overinstalled WindowsME

Here's what I have tried so far:
Upgraded chipset drivers to latest 4-in-1.
Upgraded ATI drivers to both the latest official and the latest beta drivers
Latest half-life patch
I tried disabling the onboard audio
I tried disabling AGP 2X and 4X
I tried closing all programs except Explorer (not IE) and the Systray

I tried every combination of the above that I could think of

AND IT STILL LOCKS UP! HELP!!

I am supposed to have DSL up and running in a couple of days, and I will need to satisfy my frag fetish!

If anyone has insight, please let me know. I have considered upgrading the power supply to 300W (even though the current ps is AMD approved). I am not sure which version of DirectX I am running (how can you tell?)

Thanks in advance for any help!!:(
