Can anyone solve this obscure problem in Win98!?!?

I'm running Win98 and when i right click on a file or shortcut, the right menu takes like 6 secs to pop up. Before, the menu use to instantaneously pop up. I didn't notice this until i was playing an mp3 and right clicked on a file to check on the properties when the song paused for the time it took for the menu to appear. It may seem like a little problem and yes, i could coexist with it, but damn! It's driving me insane!! By the way, i'm running an Athlon 800, but this issue never came when i was running my little P75.

Do you have any programs installed that add to the "right-click" menu? Winamp, Winrar, Winzip?

I think Killbat is on the right track here (although a scandisk and a defrag never hurts). Get the TweakUI program for Win98 and it should allow you to remove some of the items that pop up when you right-click (and should make it faster).

Another problem I had that was similiar - I played around with some 'send to' settings, but that caused the floppy to get scanned whenever the send to menu appeared. Check this isn't the age old 'everything stops while Windows checks all the removable drives' problem.
