Can anyone recommend some good voice recognition software?

I have a friend who hasn't learned how to type, and for whatever reason she's not eager to do so. She does the "hunt and peck" method and it takes her forever to compose messages of any length.

I'd like to recommend some good and affordable voice recognition software to her, but I know nothing about it. I know there's Dragon Naturally Speaking, but I know nothing about. Good or bad? Anything better? I'm guessing she wouldn't want to spend more than $100, and probably less.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Naturally Speaking is really her only choice. Costs more than I'd like, but when you own the market...

Seconded - does a decent job and there is no real competition to it on the market

What about the built-in Windows 7 speech recognition software?

Obviously, this is an option only if Ken's friend runs Windows 7!

MS licensed Dragon Speaking

Also, there was an AT article about this a few years back. I believe the actual dragon branded software had a better detection rate than the built in one.

Either way, DNS is a great piece of software. In fact, the AT article not only was written all with DNS, but also showed that if you take out the ability to use the backspace key, it was actually more accurate than typing. Granted, editing may take a longer period of time than just hitting backspace, but if you get used to it, you can speak faster than you can type.

Especially nowadays with tons of processing power on cpus, it can be very quick.

That is correct. There is none better than DNS -. It still requires training to a particular voice.
