My wife and I have new Android phones, but no games on them. Both of us were previously pretty addicted to Bookworm on the PC, Bookworm Adventures on the PC, and then Letter Quest on an old Android phone. Letter Quest no longer seems to be avaliable on Android, unfortunately.
All of these have crossword or jumbled word puzzle type mechanics, plus powerups, where you have to keep trying to make matches, and you can then progress through the game.
