Can anyone recommend me an AGP card?

I was running a BFG 6600GT OC AGP 8x 128MB that I bought probably 1 1/2 ago. It died on me.

My backup (using now) a PNY GF4ti4200 AGP 8X.

How much is that 6000GT going for nowadays?
How much (if any) is the GF4Ti4200?

I don't play a lot of newer games, mostly stuff 2 years old or more. Should I just look for another BFG 6600GT like I had before or is there something out now for a little more money that would be worth the upgrade?

I'd like to stick with NVIDIA and I really want it to have a fan on it as it gets hot in this room.

Thanks!

6800GTs are not too much if found used. You could also go for a 7800GS but they are not much better than the 6800 and cost quite a bit more.

All AGP nvidia cards are old (seven series and back) while ATi has newer cards such as the HD 3650 and HD 3850. Any reason you want to stick with nV? Anyway, 6800gt is probably your best choice.

Too bad you missed the free upgrade offers from BFG a while back.

what are your system specs?

anything slower than an AGP based X2 or C2 is a waste for the 3850.

if you are running a fast AXP, P-D ,P4 or a single core A64 then an X1950 or 7800-7900 series card is probably as fast as I would go.

Anything slower than that a 7600 series or 6800 series card...or if you want to use an ATI card the X8x0 series or X1650 series is probably fast enougth.

Here's how I'd rank various nvidia cards in terms of performance:
7300GT
6600GT/6800XT/6800 vanilla
7600GS
6800GS/6800GT
7600GT/7800GS

Check ebay for prices. I think you could get a used 6600GT for about $40 and a 7600GT for about $100. If you can swing it, the 7600GT would give you a nice boost in performance over your previous 6600GT. It's performance (assuming stock clocks) is basically the same as the 7800GS, and would be most similar to the recent Radeon HD3650.

I have a 128MB BFG 6800GS AGP I'd be willing to sell. Never been registered so lifetime warranty is still in effect. PM me if you'd be interested. I was able to unlock the 6th vertex shader too, so it has ~20% more shader power than the typicall 6800GS. I was NOT successful in unlocking the extra 4 pipes from 12 to 16 though, I get artifacts when I do so.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I guess I don't necessarily need a nvidia, I've just had good luck with the cards I have had.

My computer is an older Dell Dimension 4500. Maxes out at 1GB of RAM supported 🙁 but it works for what I need it mostly.

Are the following from CDW any good?
HD2600 PRO - 256mb
X1050 - 256mb

X1650 PRO - 512mb

I have a R1950 Pro. You'd think that it would be worth like $20 now but due to low supply and high demand, its still worth $120-150. If you can use this time to make a move to a PCI system, I would. You can probably build yourself a Core2/PCIE setup for $100 more then a high end AGP card will cost you. There are barebones 2180 systems that are selling for $130 range, add a $80-100 PCIe card and your system will be so much faster.

Stay away from the X1050. It is crap. The X1650 Pro and HD2600 Pro would be solid choices. The X1650 Pro would be a little faster than the 6600GT, and the HD2600 Pro would be faster in newer titles than either card.

An HD 2600 XT should be even better. Even better than a HD 3650 (standard), HD 2600 PRO and X1650 PRO?

I hate buying video cards, too many choices...lol

The 2600XT would be faster than the 3650, but clock speeds can vary especially on these AGP parts. The 2600 series and 3650 are basically the same card, with performance differences coming from each of their different memory and core speeds. In older titles, these cards would probably perform about the same as the X1650 Pro, but in newer titles the HD cards would be a lot faster.

Have fun with ATI drivers and anything newer than the x1k series. Doesn't take too much looking around to hear about what is basically a drop in support for the AGP versions of newer ATI cards. Some systems/people can get their cards to work, others return the card and get a X1k or Nvidia. I just picked up a 7800GS in the FS/FT here for about $70, so look around and see what you can get.
