Can anyone recommend a tried-and-true hemroid treatment?

Any tips in addition to the ones in this thread?

"Over 50% of all Americans will suffer from hemroids. Causes vary somewhat but the most common is constipation - straining too much during bowel movements to pass hard stools. This straining causes undue pressure on the walls of the rectum and anus, which can in turn cause veins to distend or swell ? just like varicose veins of the legs. In addition, hard stools can scrape the inside walls of the rectum and cause fissures or internal hemroids. Causes of hemroids also include any undue manipulation of or pressure on the rectum or anus. Pregnant women are often beset with hemroids. Causes being undue pressure and straining on the lower body by the weight of the baby and the uterus."

From here.

I would think staying regular by consuming high fiber foods is the best way to prevent it. Not so sure about treatment.

It's too late for preventative measures, unfortunately. :(

yup

also, here's some info from WebMD about treating hemorrhoids

http://www.webmd.com/hw/hemorrhoids/hw213707.asp

Thanks for the link, granolagirl (btw, I have been voting daily).

If worse comes to worst, a professional it will be. How long should one wait before seeking out a proctologist?

I've also been wary of self-treatment of medical conditions, especially if very conventional treatments have failed.

If you haven't been diagnosed with hemorrhoids before, it would probably be a good idea to see your doctor and make sure that you actually have hemorrhoids. Depending on how severe they are, they can also recommend certain procedures to take care of them.

there's some more info on WebMd about when to call a doctor:
http://www.webmd.com/hw/hemorrhoids/hw213600.asp
When To Call a Doctor

Common symptoms of hemorrhoids may indicate other serious health problems. Colon or rectal cancer and other conditions have many of the same symptoms as hemorrhoids. You should call your health professional if:

* Rectal bleeding occurs that is not associated with trying to pass stools.
* Stools become more narrow than usual (may be no wider than a pencil).
* You cannot pass stools, or you have diarrhea with abdominal bloating.
* Stools are black or tarry.
* Any unusual material seeps from the anus.
* Fever accompanies bloody stools or what you think may be hemorrhoids.
* A lump or bulge that is not tender and does not go away develops at the anal opening.

If you have hemorrhoids, call your health professional if:

* Moderate rectal pain lasts longer than 1 week after home treatment.
* Pain or swelling is severe.
* Tissue from inside the body bulges from the anus and does not return to normal after 3 to 7 days of home treatment.
* A lump inside the anus becomes bigger or more painful.

Good luck, MrsBugi

(also thanks for the daily votes)

Pick up some benefiber, and mix it into your cereal or drink it with juice. You'll have bigger stools but they will also be softer.

I found that antibiotic neosporin plus (pain relief) actually worked very well. Not only does it lessen the pain, but it helps reduce friction while pooping.

Additionally, and this may be the most helpful, is taking this herbal remedy "Marchmallow Root". You can find it at most health food stores.

I had one recently, it went away in a few days. I always eat a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast, and sometime during the day I take some flaxseed. While I had the hemroid I started eating a cup of wheat bran a day. Don't spend too much time during your bowel movements, and drink lots of water.

Thank you all for the helpful advice. I will be trying every "home remedy" I can that seems safe (i.e. Benefiber, drinking plenty of water, etc.), and if the condition persists after another week, I will consult a doctor.

No more month-long diets of Whoppers and diet Pepsi for me, lesson learned. :(
