Can anyone recommend a local mover for the DC/MD/VA area?

I'm moving next weekend, and I still don't have a mover scheduled!! I need some recommendations, because I don't want to pay bottom dollar and have my stuff broken/lost but I still want a good deal. Any recommendations?

well you figure the labor guys are getting paid 10 bucks an hour, so that's 120 in labor + cost of truck, which we'll say is 50 bucks

that leaves 170 for overhead and profit

not too bad =P

That sounds like a pretty good price. But I know nothing about moving costs. That's under $30 per man hour, and they're providing the truck.

I'd just borrow a pickup truck from a friend and move my own stuff.

Rent a Uhaul then stop by a 7-11 in the morning. Seriously. I did that. The two guys worked very hard. We paid them well and fed them.

I should've clarified--the $340 sounds a bit too good to be true so I'm afraid they'll run off with my stuff! ;)

But that's just the base rate--they said to add another $40 for a mattress pad to wrap the mattress, and another $20 for every piece of wood furniture I need wrapped (table, bookshelf, chest, bed, coffee table) and another $20 to wrap any glass-top pieces (entertainment center). So that's another $160 on top. I'd rather pay a bit more for something that's all-inclusive and has a reputation.

The wrapping charges are outrageous. You can buy your own mattress pads for $15 a piece and $5 for a plastic mattress bag.

Decent blankets work great at protecting furniture and glass tops.

Nothing states that you can not ride in the van with your stuff.

Man, when I moved I was charged $275 for 3 hours with two guys and the truck was included. This included all furniture wrappings, etc. And man, those guys worked hard for 3 hours, wrapped every piece of furniture that could possibly get dinged (The company was insured though). After that, I tipped them about $60. It was worth it to me.

A friend of mine moved last year and had a terrible time with the movers. I'll find out who he had so you don't hire them.

From where to where, zip to zip?
I can ask my friend but it is getting late in the game.

That sounds like a deal to me. I was quoted $3500 to move my 500 sq ft apartment from Manhattan to Northern VA. Needless to say I'll be going the DIY route. :p

In my area they charge $65/hr for just two guys to help you load/unload, plus a $50+ travel fee. Four hours you're looking at about $250 + $50 = $300, and that's just two guys, and without truck rental. If $340 covers 4 hours with 3 guys and a truck, that's NOT a ripoff.

Edit:

Out of Manassas it's $90/hr for 3 guys, so $360, plus a $45 flat travel fee, PLUS you'd have to pay for a truck. I'd say you're getting a deal.
