IDK... I'm old school and just like a physical book. I'm like the only one in the whole damn family with a bookshelf. Pretty unreal.

I like them too, but when you have to move three bookcases worth every year, it gets old. I wish I could digitize all of my books to PDF.

I'd say most readers prefer physical books, but carrying a Kindle is more practical for travel, especially for avid readers. I'm not going to carry around more than a few physical books, but meanwhile I can carry around my entire ebook collection on a Kindle.

My first kindle was actually the base model kindle, and it was actually fine. I got a lot of mileage out of it.

Unfortunately I accidentally broke it, so I upgraded to a paper white. The paper white is great. Text is clearer, the backlight is nice (it is nice to have the option even if you don't always need it), and it also has a faster processor than the regular kindle. So, it turns pages quicker.

And it doesn’t matter which brick I use? A blackberry one or an apple brick with an android cable will work fine? I’ve never really understood the whole brick cable thing. Some are larger, some smaller, some cables thicker etc.

Yes, essentially any USB charger that terminates in micro USB will be fine. The Kindle is such a low draw device and you'll be charging it so infrequently that even if it's capable of charging faster than the base 500ma USB rate it just doesn't matter. Charge it overnight once every few weeks and you'll be fine.

Did anyone get the paper white with cellular?

This one is highly lifestyle dependent. IMO for the vast, vast majority of people it's not worth it. If you're posting here you're probably up to the task of finding wifi and connecting to it. If you have a smartphone you'll probably rarely find yourself in a situation where the kindle has coverage but the phone doesn't, so you can always hotspot. I would say it's really only worth it for people who don't carry other technology, aren't technologically inclined (at all), and expect things to just work without them doing anything. Anyone else? Get the wifi version.

In short:

Get a paperwhite. Get the wifi special offers version. If you decide you don't like the ads you can pay to have it removed later. I've even heard that they will just remove them if you ask nicely, but IMO that's kind of a dick move to take the discount ahead of time and then find a workaround.

Just liking physical books better isn't the only variable though. Because of it's weight and ease of use, I've read much more with my kindle than I ever would have relying on a library or something. I'm also becoming more aware of the waste our society generates as time goes on, and I kind of like the idea of not using so much damn paper just for a little entertainment that I'll only read once.

I agree with this completely. The thing to remember is that text books are really small so the kindle holds a lot of books, literally thousands. I just checked and mine has 211 on it currently, and I have a 2012 Kindle Touch. So, it is easy to load it up and have months worth of reading material no matter how voracious a reader you are.

The real problem is organizing all those books. For whatever reason Amazon has never given us any good tools for organizing books on our Kindle.

This. I finish a book and I immediately start looking for the next one. I don't have to leave my house and go to a library or book store. I am amazed at just how many books I have purchased since I started with my e-reader compared to when I had to go buy/borrow physical books. Plus there is the added bonus that I have the app on my phone and tablet so I always have my "book" with me to read whenever I am standing in line, eating lunch etc.

Yah seriously. Collections are just decent but it doesn't sync collections you create on the web app with the kindle device, at least not in my recent experience. That makes no sense.

One has to wonder what will happen to all our literature once an EMP goes off or as time moves forward. Perhaps preserve everything on M-disk?

I like my Paperwhite Version 2 which I got for $99. It kicks ass on my first Kindle, for which I bought all kinds of cumbersome external lights and has incredibly horrible battery life in comparison. I haven't checked recently, but the $50 or more for the upgrade that followed the Paperwhite (Voyage?) seemed like not much bang for my buck. Higher res that I wouldn't notice, a level flange on the side that isn't a concern for me, some buttons instead of strictly touch screen actions that could be more trouble than they're worth. I didn't pony up extra bucks for the ad-less version, which is an option you can go for later if you want. I just ignore the screen when it's off. I have a case for it but never use it. Maybe if I traveled more I would. I didn't bother going for 4G. I just get my updates from wifi.

Thanks! I'm going to go with the paper white. Can anyone recommend something that isn't bulky that will protect it in my backpack?

If you are a real cheapie like me just use a used padded envelope. Did that in a briefcase for years, then decided I didn't even need the padded envelope. They are pretty rugged.

Interesting. So they won't get scratched up just laying in a backpack laptop section alongside a macbook air?

Good choice. I have a Kindle Fire HD which is just kind of a cheaper general Android tablet but I've been reading books mainly on my phone via the Kindle app until I decided to get a Paperwhite a couple weeks ago cause they were on sale. I like it a lot so far, mainly reading it in the dark before I go to sleep, and like someone else mentioned the ads are really unobtrusive and I just see them for a second before I swipe to unlock the screen. The battery life is pretty boss. I charged it fully when I got it Oct. 6th and I haven't charged it since (I read on it about 40 minutes or so a day, though the screen brightness is down quite a bit since I use it in the dark mostly). My dad likes his Paperwhite cause his eyes are too bad for reading normal books (he can adjust the fonts on the device).

I got a cover for mine when I ordered it, this one: Fintie Case. Paperwhite snaps into it and it works and looks fine. I'd rather not have a case, but just like my phone, I think I'd regret not having one cause even though I'm really careful and take care of my things, shit happens (judging by the cover of my phone case too).

FYI all Kindles are on sale today! I was really confused at first when I noticed the bundle price had dropped a ton. The paper white is available for $89, for example.

Still have my Paperwhite from 2012, in perfect condition and working as good as new. Never put it in a case, and have not been particularly careful with it either. The only thing I wish it had was waterproofing, but I'm not paying for a new Oasis just for that.

Wow, no case since 2012? Any scratches?

None that I could think of, but now that you mention it, I think the charging port area is slightly scratched because my one year old has mastered unplugging charging cables but struggles getting them back in. So other than that, no scratches. ;)

The plastic exterior holds up very well over time. It's a shame flagship phones have moved away from (nicely done) plastic.
